  • New ta-C Coating for Tools – High Hardness, Low Friction and Longer Service Life

STATON, s.r.o. has developed a new tetrahedral amorphous carbon coating (ta-C), designed for demanding industrial applications where the combination of high hardness, low friction and wear resistance is crucial.

The ta-C coating belongs to the group of advanced DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coatings with a high proportion of sp3 bonds, which give it exceptional mechanical and tribological properties.

What is a ta-C coating and how does it differ from standard coatings

Unlike standard PVD coatings such as TiAlN or CrN, the ta-C coating is based on a diamond-like carbon structure. It is the high proportion of sp3 bonds that gives it extreme hardness, a very low coefficient of friction and high wear resistance.

During its development, a special controlled ARC mode was used, which enables the stable formation of the required structure. Conventional ARC technologies were not able to ensure the same coating properties over the long term.

Main benefits of the ta-C coating in practice

The new ta-C coating from STATON brings specific benefits in real-world use:

  • hardness of 40 – 60 GPa
  • low coefficient of friction of approximately 0.15
  • significant reduction of material adhesion
  • higher wear resistance
  • stable performance up to 400 °C

In practice, this means a smoother cut, lower tool load and a significantly longer service life, especially when machining demanding materials.

Where the ta-C coating is most commonly used

The ta-C coating is suitable for applications where high friction occurs and where there is a risk of material sticking to the tool. Typical applications include the machining of aluminium and copper alloys, non-ferrous metals, bronze, magnesium materials, plastics, wood and difficult-to-machine materials.

In these applications, it helps reduce adhesion and improves the quality of the machined surface.

Comparison of ta-C with standard coatings

Compared to traditional PVD coatings such as TiAlN or CrN, the ta-C coating has lower friction, better properties when machining non-ferrous metals, reduced material build-up and higher efficiency at high speeds.

This makes it an ideal solution for specific applications where conventional coatings reach their limits.

Recommended coating thickness

For cutting tools such as drills and milling cutters, the recommended thickness is 0.5 to 2 µm. This range ensures optimal tool protection without negatively affecting the geometry of the cutting edge.

ta-C coating from STATON – a solution for demanding production

The new ta-C coating from STATON, s.r.o. is the result of in-house development and optimized deposition technology.

For customers, this means:

  • higher tool performance
  • longer service life
  • more stable production process
  • lower operating costs

Higher hardness. Lower friction. Longer service life.
That is the ta-C coating from STATON.
