  • High-Performance Coatings with Exceptional Surface Quality – Minimal surface roughness and outstanding hardness and durability

One of the key challenges in coin minting is achieving both durability and high productivity, whether for standard circulation coins or collector-quality pieces. Coin dies are typically made from high-grade tool steel, such as K455 or Böhler, and are traditionally chrome-plated, giving a service life of around 20,000 coins per die under standard minting conditions.

To extend die longevity, the surface is treated with a hard, wear-resistant coating. Even a simple chrome nitride-based coating can increase the service life by 2.5 times, reaching approximately 50,000 coins.

Staton has developed a specialised coating specifically for this purpose, dramatically boosting die life by up to 19 times—over 180,000 coins per die. The performance of this coating has been independently verified, offering minting operations a reliable and cost-effective solution.

Staton s.r.o. is committed to further enhancing the quality and longevity of these coatings through advanced nanostructuring. This next-generation approach is set to extend die service life by an order of magnitude.

Our key partner in this field is Mincovňa Kremnica, š.p., for whom longer-lasting dies not only provide a stronger competitive edge in the market but also present a significant opportunity to reduce tool production costs.
