Coin dies are typically made from high-grade tool steel, such as K455 or Böhler, and are traditionally chrome-plated, giving a service life of around 20,000 coins per die under standard minting conditions.
To extend die longevity, the surface is treated with a hard, wear-resistant coating. Even a simple chrome nitride-based coating can increase the service life by 2.5 times, reaching approximately 50,000 coins.
